To hold a contractor license with the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department, you need general liability on file, workers' comp or a signed rejection, and a certificate written exactly the way PPRBD asks. Here is what that means and how to get it right the first time.
Get a PPRBD-Ready QuotePPRBD licenses contractors working in Colorado Springs, unincorporated El Paso County, Fountain, Woodland Park, Manitou Springs, Monument, Green Mountain Falls, Palmer Lake and Calhan. State-licensed electricians and plumbers also register with PPRBD and must keep the same insurance on file.
| Requirement | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| General liability limits | $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 general aggregate for most license classes, including building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing. |
| Certificate holder | Must read exactly: Pikes Peak Regional Building Department, 2880 International Circle, Colorado Springs, CO 80910. |
| Named insured | Must match the business name on your license application and Colorado Secretary of State records exactly, including trade names. |
| 10-day notice endorsement | Your policy needs an endorsement requiring the carrier to notify PPRBD at least 10 calendar days before any cancellation or reduction in coverage. Not every carrier offers it. |
| Policy number | The certificate must show a policy number. A binder or "pending" policy only satisfies PPRBD until the temporary coverage ends. |
| Full scope of your license | Coverage has to fit all the work your license allows. If you can work on residential and commercial jobs, your policy can't exclude either. |
| Workers' compensation | With employees: a current workers' comp certificate. With no employees: a Rejection of Coverage that complies with the Colorado Division of Workers' Compensation. |
Roofing contractors need one of these two sentences in the Description of Operations on the certificate:
Wrecking and fire alarm or fire suppression contractors need similar wording for their work. More on roofer coverage: roofing contractor insurance.
PPRBD treats a lapse, cancellation or reduction in coverage as cause for automatic license suspension. That is why the 10-day notice endorsement matters, and why renewals need a fresh certificate on file.
PPRBD accepts certificates by email at [email protected], by fax at (719) 327-2951, or by mail or in person at 2880 International Circle. We can send it for you.
It only counts until the temporary coverage ends. Send PPRBD a new certificate as soon as the policy number is assigned.
Not if you file a valid rejection of coverage. Colorado sole proprietors and qualifying LLC members or officers can reject coverage for themselves, but you need it on file with PPRBD. See Colorado workers' comp insurance.
